The High Commission of Sri Lanka in Singapore, along with the other diplomatic missions of labour-exporting countries, participated in the International Migrants Day 2024 celebrations organized by the Ministry of Manpower of Singapore on 15 December 2024 at Jurong Lake Gardens. The event brought together more than 10,000 members of the migrant community from diverse backgrounds, celebrating their unity, inclusion, and multicultural vibrancy. The celebration featured an array of cultural performances that showcased the talents of the migrant community and highlighted their vital role in Singapore’s economic and social development.
Addressing the gathering, Minister for Manpower of Singapore Dr. Tan See Leng acknowledged the immense contributions of migrant workers to Singapore's growth, and expressed gratitude for their role in building Singapore’s infrastructure and supporting its communities.
High Commissioner of Sri Lanka to Singapore, Senarath Dissanayake welcomed Minister Dr. Tan See Leng to the Sri Lankan booth, presenting a Sri Lankan cultural token. During the interaction, the High Commissioner reaffirmed the Mission’s commitment to ensuring the welfare and well-being of Sri Lankan migrant workers while promoting cross-cultural understanding and collaboration. The Minister commended the contributions of Sri Lankan workers to Singaporean society over the years, recognizing their dedication and hard work.
The Sri Lankan booth was an engaging platform that promoted the country’s rich cultural and natural diversity and its unique products. The booth drew significant interest from attendees who had the opportunity to learn about what Sri Lanka offers. Visitors were treated to Sri Lankan tea, and Sri Lankan migrant workers were presented with giveaway bags as a gesture of gratitude and acknowledgement of their contributions.
A large number of Sri Lankan migrant workers actively participated in the celebrations, proudly showcasing their cultural heritage and identity. A notable highlight of the evening was a fashion walk by Sri Lankan migrant workers which stood out for its display of cultural and artistic expression while strengthening the presence and identity of Sri Lanka’s migrant community in Singapore.
