The High Commission of Sri Lanka in Ottawa celebrated the 76th Independence Day of Sri Lanka by hosting a diplomatic reception on 05 February 2024 at the official residence of the High Commissioner. Deputy Minister for International Development of Canada Christopher MacLennan, Member of Parliament from Nepean Chandra Arya, higher officials from Global Affairs Canada, members of diplomatic corps and Sri Lankan expatriate community in Ottawa and Toronto and the staff of the High Commission participated in the event.
Welcoming the guests, Acting High Commissioner Anzul Jhan emphasized the Independence Day message of President Ranil Wickremesinghe and stated that this year Sri Lanka has effectively navigated through many challenges, steering the economy towards stability with the support of the global community.
Speaking on Sri Lanka Canada relations, she said that Canada has been a strong development partner to Sri Lanka since its independence and founding member of the Colombo plan since 1951. She further stated the Hardy Collage of Technology in Ampara, the first phase of the Colombo International Airport, the Maduru Oya Project stand as testaments of Sri Lanka- Canada relations and Canada continues to support Sri Lanka in its National Language Programme and assists through various multilateral agencies.
Acting High Commissioner also said that Canada hosts the largest overseas Sri Lankan community outside its borders, approximately 250,000 and the majority of them are from the Tamil community. Highlighting the work carried out by the High Commission, she said that the Mission is working closely with the Office of Overseas Sri Lankan Affairs (OOSLA) in Colombo with a view to connecting Canadians of Sri Lankan origin with Sri Lanka.
Further, she announced that the Canadian Network of Sri Lankan Academics will be launched on 23 February 2024 with over hundred academics with the aim of working with universities in Sri Lanka to share their knowledge.
Deputy Minister for International Development of Canada Christopher MacLennan in his address stated that Canada stands with Sri Lanka during the economic crisis. He particularly welcomed the Sri Lankan Government taking difficult decisions to steer the country on the path to economic prosperity.
As a special highlight of the event, ‘Jayamangala Gatha’ was recited by renowned music director, composer and singer Lasith Deerantha blessing all living-beings to overcome all difficulties. As part of the celebration, the High Commission also promoted Sri Lankan cuisine under the theme ‘Road to Colombo Street Food’ specially curated by Chef Chaminda Ambagaspitiye from Regina in collaboration with Dhruvees Restaurant headed by Donald Wingell. The guests were served with array of Sri Lankan meals, sweetmeats, and Dilmah Tea. Tourist promotional videos were also screened during the celebrations.
