The High Commission of Sri Lanka in Kuala Lumpur commemorated the 76th National Independence Day on 04 February 2024 with a grand Flag Hoisting Ceremony under the patronage of Sri Lanka's High Commissioner to Malaysia Air Chief Marshal (Rtd.) Sumanagala Dias.The ceremony resonated with patriotism and unity, drawing over 250-300 Sri Lankans and Sri Lanka-originated Malaysians.
The National Anthem and the traditional echoes of Magul Bera ignited the fervor of patriotism amongst all present. A collective recitation of the Jayamangala Gatha symbolized the shared aspirations for unity and prosperity.
In a display of religious inclusivity, prayers were offered by representatives of Buddhist, Hindu, Islamic, and Christian faiths invoking blessings. Along with the prayers, a two minutes silence honored the sacrifices of the freedom fighters and war heroes, who valiantly laid down their lives for Sri Lanka.
High Commissioner Sumangala Dias read out the Independence Day message of the President while the Honorable Prime Minister's message was read out by the Head of Chancery/Counsellor. The Second Secretary read out the Foreign Minister's Independence Day message.
Further, High Commissioner Sumangala Dias reflected upon the indomitable spirit of Sri Lanka's leaders, whose unwavering resolve led to our liberation from colonial shackles. He called for all communities for a common Sri Lankan identity.
A cultural dance was performed by Sinhala Cultural Dance Troupe of Sasana Abhiwurdhi Wardhana Society showcasing the vibrant traditions of Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka's cultural heritage was vividly portrayed through an array of traditional cuisine and delicacies, provided by Sri Lankan restaurants across Malaysia, infusing the festivities with flavors.
The Sri Lankan High Commission extends heartfelt appreciation to all participants, attendees, dance students, and Sri Lankan restaurants in Malaysia for their support and participation in commemorating the National Day.
