Professor G.L Peiris, Minister of External Affairs, was elected Rapporteur of the Council of Ministers Meeting of the Indian Ocean Rim Association in Perth, Australia.
Sri Lanka will host the first Centre of Excellence in Ocean Sciences and the Environment. Research in to issues connected with maximum exploitation of marine resources in a sustainable manner, and importance of shipping and trade for development of the economy of Member Countries, were identified as priority objectives of the Association.
The Association consists of 20 countries from three continents and represents 2.5 billion people.
