In appreciation of President Xi Jinping’s visit

President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday said the Government has decided to reduce the price of fuel, and the electricity tariff from midnight yesterday in appreciation of Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit and China’s contribution to reduce cost of electricity and energy.
The President said as a result of the commissioning of the Norochcholai coal power plant, the electricity tariff can be reduced by 25%, with effect from midnight yesterday.
In addition, the President said that the price of petrol will be reduced by Rs. 5 per litre, kerosene by Rs. 20 and diesel by Rs. 3 respectively, effective from midnight yesterday. President Rajapaksa noted the above in his remarks to the press after the inauguration of the Norochcholai Coal Power project in the company of President Xi Jinping.
The President further said “in appreciation of Your Excellency’s visit and enormous contribution to reduce the cost of electricity and energy, I now announce that electricity bills of the people will be reduced by 25 percent with effect from today”.
“I also announce that the price of kerosene will be reduced by Rs. 20 per litre, price of petrol by Rs. 5 per litre and price of diesel by Rs. 3 per litre today. This will benefit all households in Sri Lanka”.
Commenting on the power project, the President said “the current commissioning of the 2nd and 3rd phases of the power project will bring down the cost of electricity in our country”.
“I am happy to announce that this year all households in Sri Lanka will have electricity and this project will ensure a quality supply of electricity to all my people,” the President said.
“Your country’s assistance in this regard, Excellency, has enabled me to realise a pledge to my people, for which I am thankful,” the President added.
