The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Yangon together with the Sri Lankan expatriate community in Myanmar organized a special religious event on 16 March 2019 and on awareness programme titled “ Why the Thripitaka needs to be a World Heritage” to mark the “Thripitakabhivandana Week”.
Sri Lanka's Ambassador to Myanmar Nandimithra Ekanayake highlighted the significant efforts of the Government of Sri Lanka to declare the “Thripitaka” as a National Heritage of Sri Lanka and to inscribe it in the Memory of the World Register of UNESCO.
Sri Lanka and Myanmar have a historical relationship based on Buddhism. The Embassy of Sri Lanka has sought the support of the Government of Myanmar for Sri Lanka's application to the UNESCO to inscribe the Tripitaka in the memory of the world Register.
