Embassy of Sri Lanka in Rome wins Runner-Up & Best Food Trophies at Commonwealth Club Cricket Cup 2024

 

The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Rome took part in the Commonwealth Club Cricket Cup 2024 and Commonwealth Food Fair organised by the Commonwealth Club of Rome, in collaboration with the Italian Cricket Federation. The events were held on 28 September 2024 at the Roma Cricket Ground, Via Valle di Perna SNC Spinaceto, in Rome.

The Runner-Up Trophy of the Commonwealth Club Cricket Cup 2024 was won by the Sri Lanka Embassy Team, who demonstrated great vigour and talent throughout the tournament. Beating a previous record set by Bangladesh, the Sri Lanka Embassy Team set the highest record of the tournament with 74 runs against the British Embassy team. They also secured a thrilling victory against the Bangladesh Embassy team, the winner of 2023 tournament. The Uniform of the team was sponsored by Soloviaggi S.R.L. Travel agent in Rome.

The Embassy also took part in the Commonwealth Food Fair 2024 held on the sidelines of the tournament. Accordingly, a country stall was organized and visitors were served to a variety of Sri Lankan delicacies including kottu roti, cutlets, chicken and vegetable samosas, fried prawns, fish rolls, cupcakes and Ceylon tea. This arrangement was made with the support of Mission staff and Sri Lankan restaurants in Rome-, including Ceylon Chef, Suresh Food & Drinks, Seven Lanka and Manju Catering Service, and Sweet Heart Bakers. The Embassy of Sri Lanka was awarded the Best Food Trophy 2024.

It was the first time Sri Lanka Embassy participating in the Commonwealth Club Cricket   Tournament. Teams representing diplomatic missions, organisations and cricket clubs including British and Bangladesh Embassies, the British Army XI (London), UN Rome based agencies, the Commonwealth Club and JFC Naples (NATO) also participated in the tournament.

The Cricket Cup Tournament was started in 2017 by the Commonwealth Club of Rome to promote diplomacy, competitive spirit, and cricket in Rome, amongst the Commonwealth members, as well as within the larger international and diplomatic community in Italy.

The Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Rome Satya Rodrigo and the  staff of the Embassy appreciated the support rendered by members of the Sri Lankan community in Rome in facilitating the Embassy to take part in the event. The Sri Lanka Embassy looks forward to forming a youth cricket team to further popularize the game in Italy.
