The Festival of Poson, which marks the advent of Buddhism in Sri Lanka by Arahat Mahinda Thero, was celebrated at the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Jordan in collaboration with the Sri Lankan community at the Embassy premises on 21 June 2024. Religious activities were carried out by the Sri Lankan community and the Embassy staff to mark this importance day, reflecting on the noble qualities of the Buddha and expressing gratitude to Arahant Mahinda Thero for bringing the message of the Buddha to Sri Lanka.
At the beginning of the festival, Buddhist devotees observed Atasil, followed by the Buddha Pooja and an almsgiving. A reordered Dhamma sermon was delivered, emphasizing the significance of Poson Poya Day and the importance of understanding and following Buddhist teachings at all times.
Ambassador of Sri Lanka in Amman J.A.D.S. Priyangika Wijegunasekara urged all Buddhist devotees to commit to safeguarding and preserving the invaluable Buddhist heritage brought to Sri Lanka by Arahat Mahinda Thero.
At the end of Atasil programme, Sri Lankan children recited Buddhist devotional songs and staged a drama enacting the scene of Princess Hemamala and Prince Dantha bringing the sacred tooth relic to Sri Lanka from India.
The Embassy premises were adorned with colorful decorations, Poson lanterns, Buddhist flags, and illuminations. The Poson celebrations were attended by more than 400 visitors. A Dansala was conducted for the visitors.
