The 75th of Independence Day was celebrated at the Sri Lanka Embassy in Jordan with the participation of staff and their family members on 4 February 2023.
The event commenced with hoisting of the national flag by Ambassador-designate J.A.D.S. Priyangika Wijegunasekara followed by the national anthem of Sri Lanka in Sinhala and Tamil languages, observing a two-minute silence in memory of those who sacrificed their lives for the motherland, lighting the traditional oil lamp and conducting multi-faith religious observances invoking blessings for Sri Lanka and its people.
The message of His Excellency the President was read by Ambassador-designate Priyangika Wijegunasekara while those of Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena and Minister of Foreign Affairs were read by Third Secretary (Employment & Welfare) P.A. Rupasinghe and Management Service Officer, Harshana Liyanage, respectively.
Addressing the gathering, Ambassador-designate Priyangika Wijegunasekara appreciated the commendable role played by the Sri Lankan community in Jordan to strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries and their cooperation towards the realization of national objectives. Reiterating the salient points of Independence Day messages of President Ranil Wickremesinghe and Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena, she called upon Sri Lankans in Jordan to give their fullest support and contribution to overcome challenges and build an progressive and economically sound nation.
Tourism promotional videos were screened and guests were served refreshments at the end of the event.
