Embassy of Sri Lanka in Jakarta commences People to People Diplomacy Programme

The Embassy of Sri Lanka, as part of its public diplomacy initiatives to enhance people to people contacts between Sri Lanka and Indonesia, organized an event targeting Indonesian University students, on 27 September 2019 at the Embassy premises. The event was well attended by around 40 students from different universities and student associations in the Jakarta area. The programme was commenced with the lighting of the traditional oil lamp.

Ambassador Yasoja Gunasekera, in her welcoming remarks, highlighted the historical relations between Sri Lanka and Indonesia and gave a basic introduction of Sri Lanka’s culture, economy and UNESCO world heritage sites.  She also touched on the multi-faceted bilateral relationship between the two countries.

A Sri Lankan cuisine demonstration conducted by Personal Assistant to the Ambassador Iranganie Subasinghe was a major attraction to the students who were present at the event. Sri Lankan traditional “Kiribath” and “Fried Lunu Miris” were prepared at the demonstration which was actively and eagerly joined by the students.

The game “Every Day Words” between the children of Home Based Staff and university students facilitated by Attaché Diana Karunaratne showed the similarity between commonly used Sinhala language words and Bahasa Indonesia words, was very much enjoyed by all.

The event was concluded by serving Kiribath, Lunu Miris and Ceylon tea prepared during the demonstration.
