Communities should work towards harmony – Prelates

The Mahanayake of t he Asgiriya Chapter Most Venerable Udugama Sri Buddharakkitha Thera said there was a time in the country, during the time of late D. S. Senanayake, where there was unity among the communities. “Somehow or other t here had been a breakdown over the years. But, there is every possibility of bringing that era i nto t he country if all communities get together and work for the common good and unity in the country.”

The Thera made these observations when former Media Minister Imtiaz Bakeer Markar presented a book written by him titled "Mirror of a Patriot," about the late Dr T.B. Jayah who had been the first High Commissioner in Pakistan and had refused citizen status when offered by the Pakistan Prime Minister.

Late Dr. Jayah had also been the Principal of Zahira College from 1921 – 1948 and taught at Ananda College, Colombo earlier.

The Thera said people like Dr. T.B.Jayah had worked for such goals as unity, peace and prosperity among citizens.

he Anunayake of the Malwatta Chapter, Venerable Niyangoda Vijitha Siri Thera said, the ti me has come for all communities to get together, to form an authority to discuss issues that pertain to the respective communities and find solutions for a better Sri Lanka. Everyone should think of the future and not the present, if the country has to be a nation of one people.

Late T.B.Jayah was a member of the committee to advice on the question of the national flag, appointed in 1948.
