The first working day of year 2019 was marked with a ceremony at the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Jordan.
Sri Lanka's Ambassador to Jordan A.L.M. Lafeer hoisted the national flag, followed by singing of the national anthem by all members of the staff. In remembrance of national heroes and those who sacrificed their lives for motherland, a two-minutes silence was observed. Thereafter, officials took the Oath of the Public Servants in their respective languages.
The Ambassador, having extended new year wishes, stated in his brief remarks that the government servants are duty bound to implement the policies and the instructions of the government. He further said that the Embassy staff, including the Ambassador, should bear in mind that they are here to, among many other duties, serve and look after the wellbeing of nearly 12,000 Sri Lankan expatriate workers in Jordan.
The dawn of the New Year 2019 was celebrated by the Embassy staff by lighting the traditional oil lamp and sharing traditional Sri Lankan milk rice and sweetmeats.
