A Chinese company engaged in one of the largest projects in Sri Lanka has organized an all-island art competition in the country involving over 200 students, an official said Monday.

China Machinery Engineering Corporation (CMEC) launched the activity called "Better Tomorrow" in an attempt to promote its corporate social responsibility.

The final 50 students displayed their talents at a ceremony on Saturday, painting on reusable bags that were handmade by women in southern Sri Lanka, which was severely hit by tsunami in 2004.

The top three contestants were selected by judges from the Colombo University and the Visual and Performing Arts University and they were presented with certificates and cash prizes.

CMEC is a construction and engineering company with a specialization in construction of power projects in generation, transmission and distribution.

The company has been tasked in Sri Lanka with building the country's first power plant, which is also one of the key projects of cooperation between the Sri Lankan and Chinese governments.

The plant, located in the northwestern town of Norochcholai, is the largest venture to be completed by a Chinese company in this country. It is scheduled to be handed over to the Sri Lankan government within next few weeks.
