Champika discusses with Russian ambassador assistance in nuclear field

23-2-2015-Island-1Close on the heels of Indo-Lanka bilateral agreement on civil nuclear cooperation, Power and Energy Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka yesterday held discussions with Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Sri Lanka Alexander A. Karchava to explore ways and means of improving country’s nuclear energy sector with assistance from Moscow.

The discussion was held at the Power and Energy Ministry.

Ambassador Karchava agreed to provide fullest support to Sri Lanka to develop the country’s atomic and nuclear energy sector through transfer of Russian atomic and nuclear technology and thereby promote technical cooperation between the two countries.

They also discussed ways to use modern technology in the electricity sector of the country.

Meanwhile Minister Ranawaka expressed his gratitude and thanks to Russia for assisting Sri Lanka and for promoting bilateral cooperation between two countries.

He also expressed regret over shortcomings in providing power supply to the new Russian Embassy in Colombo.

Sri Lanka on Monday (16) signed its first ever civil nuclear cooperation agreement with India during President Maithripala Sirisena’s first overseas visit to New Delhi after assuming office.

The nuclear agreement will facilitate cooperation in the transfer and exchange of knowledge and expertise, sharing of resources, capacity-building and training of personnel in peaceful uses of nuclear energy, including use of radioisotopes, nuclear safety, radiation safety, nuclear security, radioactive waste management and nuclear and radiological disaster mitigation and environmental protection.
