Celebration of the 76th Anniversary of the Independence of Sri Lanka

 

The Consulate General of Sri Lanka in Toronto together with the Sri Lankan Community celebrated the 76th Anniversary of the Independence of Sri Lanka on 04 February 2024 at the Toronto Pavilion.

Over thousand participants representing the multiethnic Sri Lankan community in Canada participated in the celebration which was enriched with a vibrant multicultural programme presented by renowned dance and performing arts organizations.

Following the singing of the National Anthem,  multi-faith religious observances were conducted at the beginning of the event. The Independence Day Messages of the President, Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Sri Lanka were read out by the staff of the Consulate.

The religious dignitaries who were present at the event emphasized the importance of the ongoing reconciliation efforts of the country as a way forward to rebuild Sri Lanka. They commended the participation of all Sri Lankan ethnic communities in Canada in this event, expressing their desire to transcend ethnic diversity and unite for the development of the country.

The Consul General of Sri Lanka in Toronto Thushara Rodrigo addressing the participants stated that as a nation Sri Lankans could overcome these difficulties through some dedicated efforts and fulfilling our individual obligations towards the country. He further said that highly skilled and educated overseas Sri Lankans have a major role to play as a driving force for the economic development of the country as well as the regional and global integration of the Sri Lankan economy.
