Celebration of Sri Lanka’s 76th Anniversary of Independence in Guangzhou

 

The 76th Anniversary of Independence of Sri Lanka was celebrated in Guangzhou with a flag hoisting ceremony on 04 February 2024 at the Garden Hotel. Members of the Sri Lankan community and friends of Sri Lanka from Southern China joined the celebrations.

Commencing the ceremony, Consul General Suranga Algewatte unfurled the National Flag, which was followed by singing of the National Anthem, lighting of the traditional oil lamp and multi-faith religious observances to invoke blessings on the country and the people of Sri Lanka.

The Independence Day messages of the President, Prime Minister and Foreign Minister were also read out at the occasion.

The Consul General addressing the gathering highlighted Sri Lanka’s progressive economic recovery over the past years, owing to the steadfast support of fellow Sri Lankans at home and abroad, and urged to redouble their efforts and contributions going forward. He also expressed appreciation for the continuous assistance and cooperation extended by the Chinese authorities and the people of China in this endeavor, amidst flourishing Sri Lanka-China relations.

The guests were served with some unique Sri Lankan cuisine, including traditional milk rice, sweetmeats and Ceylon tea at the conclusion of the event.
