Celebrating the Tripitaka Week in Southern India

The Deputy High Commission of Sri Lanka in Southern India, in collaboration with Sri Lanka Maha Bodhi Buddhist Centre in Chennai organized “Sambuddha Pooja” on 22nd March 2019 in keeping with President Maithripala Sirisena’s decision to declare the Buddhist Week from 16th - 23rd March 2019, inscribing “Thripitaka” as National and World Heritage.

Monks, around 250 devotees who were on pilgrimage, Staff of the Bank of Ceylon, SriLankan Airlines and Sri Lanka Association in Chennai were among the participants along with the Staff and family members of the Deputy High Commission.

Welcoming the gathering, Ven. Kalawane Mahanama Thero commended the initiative of the Hon. President of Sri Lanka in recording the Thripitaka in the memory of UNESCO's  world register.

In his speech, Deputy High Commissioner Mr. V. Krishnamoorthy highlighted that the timely initiative taken by the President Maithripala Sirisena inscribing Thripitaka as National and World Heritage, would be beneficial in preserving and protecting the noble doctrine for the future generation.

Ven. Telwaththe Darmavijaya Thero spoke about the importance of the Thripitaka to the participants.  Ven. Medagangoda Sugathasara Thero conducted the Sambuddha Pooja followed by Sutra Chanting by Maha Sanga blessing the President of Sri Lanka, the Government and the participants.

Short Videos on inscribing of Thripitaka as a World Heritage were screened at the event. Vote of thanks was delivered by Mr. Wishwanath Aponsu, Minister. The event was concluded with offering of refreshments for the participants.
