Sri Lanka is deeply concerned about recent developments in the Maldives and events that have impacted on Sri Lanka, including the recent arrest of two Sri Lankan nationals in the Maldives, the questionable removal of a Maldivian social media activist who was in possession of a valid Sri Lankan visa, the stabbing of a Maldivian national in Sri Lanka, as well as the state of emergency that has been declared in the Maldives and the impeachment of the Vice-President.

Bangladesh High Commissioner calls on Dep. Foreign Minister
Dr Harsha De Silva, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, met H.E. Tarik Ahsan, High Commissioner of Bangladesh in Colombo, at Ministry of Foreign Affairs today (9/11/2015) and discussed on further strengthening political, economic and cultural relations between the two countries. Among other matters the Deputy Minister reiterated the importance of establishing linkages between the ports of Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

Addressing the high level segment of the Conference of State Parties to the UN Convention against Corruption in the Russian City of St. Petersburgh today, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Harsha de Silva stated that the Government of Sri Lanka, under the leadership of President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickramasinghe, has taken a host of measures to prevent corruption, to seek out stolen assets and to build the capacity for effectively curbing corruption and bribery, in an effective, comprehensive, result-oriented manner.

Sri Lanka joins the Open Government Partnership
Sri Lanka endorsed the Open Government Declaration committing “to foster a global culture of open government that empowers and delivers for citizens, and advances the ideals of open and participatory 21st century government,” thereby becoming the newest participating country of the Open Government Partnership (OGP). Sri Lanka is the only South Asian participating country in the OGP and joins other countries in the Asian region such as Indonesia, Mongolia, Philippines and Republic of Korea.
