Sri Lankan Consulate promotes tourism in Guangzhou

The Consulate General of Sri Lanka in Guangzhou and the Hilton Tianhe Hotel  organized the first ever Sri Lanka Food and  Dance Festival held in South China from 13 to 21 June 2012, showcasing some of the best of Sri Lanka’s vibrant culture. The promotion was timed to create excitement about Sri Lanka as a tourism destination just prior to the July-August travel peak.

Promoting Relations with Kerala

On a three-day visit to the State of Kerala, High Commissioner Prasad Kariyawasam called on Chief Minister of Kerala, Oommen Chandy, on 12 June. Member of Parliament from Kerala in the Lok Sabha, Shashi Tharoor, was present at the meeting as well. Having conveyed the greetings of President Mahinda Rajapaksa, the High Commissioner expressed Sri Lanka’s interest in reinvigorating ties between Kerala and Sri Lanka encompassing all spheres. The High Commissioner emphasised that although the economies of Kerala and Sri Lanka appear similar at first glance, there is potential to create synergies and leverage market advantage through creation of a common platform and conduct of research on commodities that both Sri Lanka and Kerala dominate in the world market.

Sri Lanka wins the first Price for Ensemble out of more than 5000 dancers, drummers and musicians in colourful costumes from more than 100 countries at the 17th Carnival of Cultures in Berlin on Sunday, 27th May 2012. Sri Lankan pageants led by the renowned Channa Upuli Dance Group from Sri Lanka and members of the Sri Lankan community representing ethnic Sinhala, Tamil and Muslim presented a colourful and impressive formation in the parade. This is the first time that Sri Lanka has participated at the event since 2007.
