On behalf of my delegation, let me felicitate you upon your assumption of the Presidency and offer our support to you in the discharge of your office during your tenure. Professor G.L. Peiris, Minister of External Affairs, held discussions with Mr. Benjamin Netanyahu, Prime Minister of Israel, at the Prime Minister’s Office in Jerusalem on Wednesday.
Minister Peiris described to the Prime Minister Sri Lanka’s inherent strengths and resources, and the toll which three decades of terrorist activity had taken on the country’s development. Prime Minister Netanyahu said that the defeat of terrorism represented a singular achievement which lays the foundation for rapid development in the near future. Prof. Peiris briefed Prime Minister Netanyahu about the work currently being done in Sri Lanka with regard to economic progress and reconciliation, and the structured programme being implemented. He spoke of the challenges confronting Sri Lanka at the present time, and the need for the country to be afforded the space and opportunity to continue with its internal processes.
The United Nations Human Rights Council has disassociated itself from the screening of the Channel 4 film “No Fire Zone: The Killing Fields of Sri Lanka” organized by Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International and FIFDH to be held on Friday (01 March 2013) in Geneva at the UN premises.
Mr. Shimon Peres, President of the State of Israel, congratulating Sri Lanka on her achievement in eradicating terrorism, said that Israel stands firmly committed to supporting the development of the country’s economy in the prevailing environment of peace and stability.
The Sri Lanka Permanent Mission in Geneva has protested against the screening of the latest Channel 4 documentary film “No Fire Zone: The Killing Fields of Sri Lanka” organized by Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International and FIFDH at the Palais de Nations in Geneva on 1st March 2013. In a letter addressed to Ambassador Remigiusz Achilles Henczel, President of the Human Rights Council, Sri Lanka’s Permanent Representative to the UN Ravinatha Aryasinha said “Sri Lanka views this film, as well as the timing of its broadcast as part of a cynical, concerted and orchestrated campaign that is strategically driven, and clearly motivated by collateral political considerations”.
The State of Palestine deeply appreciates the consistent goodwill and support it has received from Sri Lanka throughout its struggle for international recognition, and should always be counted on as a steadfast friend of Sri Lanka, President Mahmoud Abbas of the State of Palestine told Professor G. L. Peiris, Minister of External Affairs, in Ramallah on Sunday.
