Business Community in Myanmar meets the visiting Deputy Minister of External Affairs

The Deputy Minister discussed a broad range of issues relating to the promotion of private sector bilateral trade between Sri Lanka and Myanmar.   Deputy Minister, Perera stated that with the dawn of peace and political stability, Sri Lanka has become one of the most attractive investment centers in the world. The Minister pointed out that there were ample opportunities of tax free investment in the fields of industry, tourism, fisheries, infrastructure facilities and agriculture in Sri Lanka which are open for investment as never before and requested the business community to reap maximum benefits through trade agreements signed between Sri Lanka, India and Pakistan.

Deputy Minister Perera further stated that international business is also open for Myanmar businessmen in Sri Lanka which has the potential to develop gems and jewellery trade, construction, teak timber furniture, tea and ceramics in Sri Lanka.

The Deputy Minister reiterated that the tourism sector in Sri Lanka was  booming and would increase many folds within the next 3 years. With the celebration of the 2600th Buddha Jayanthi scheduled to be held in May 2011, Myanmar and Sri Lanka together can promote pilgrim tourism between the two countries.  The Minister further stated that, Sri Lanka would grow to become an industrial and tourist hub.  During the interaction, the private sector businessmen highlighted the importance of initiating direct air links and welcomed the move to further develop the existing bilateral trade ties.

The meeting was organized jointly by the Sri Lanka Embassy in Yangon and UMFCCI on the sidelines of  the BIMSTEC Summit which was held in Nay Pyi Taw.  The President , Joint General Secretary, Secretary General of the Union of Myanmar Federation of Chamber of Commerce (UMFCCI) and Officials from the Ministry of Commerce in Myanmar together with the members of the business community attended the meeting.
