First Bilateral Consultations between Sri Lanka and Oman

The first bilateral consultations between Sri Lanka and Oman took place on 15th January 2014 in Muscat in the Sultanate of Oman. The political consultations between the Foreign Ministries of Oman and Sri Lanka was held at the Diplomatic Club in Muscat. Undersecretary for Diplomatic Affairs HE Ahmed bin Yousef al Harthy headed the Omani delegation while Hon Neomal Perera lead the Sri Lankan delegation at the bilateral consultations. The meeting focused on strengthening ties between the two sides in many multifaceted areas that includes Education, Oil and Gas, Culture and Maritime Security.

Prof. Peiris discusses current issues with American Community Leaders

Professor G.L. Peiris, Minister of External Affairs, met with the Board of Directors of the Asia Foundation at the Ministry of External Affairs on Tuesday for an informal discussion.

Members of the Board who have distinguished themselves in business, politics, academia, diplomacy and other walks of life in the United States, are currently on a visit to Sri Lanka to survey projects which are being supported by the Asia Foundation and to attend some events marking the sixtieth anniversary of the establishment of the Foundation.

Foreign Ministers of Sri Lanka and the Maldives have Bilateral Discussions

Professor G.L. Peiris, Minister of External Affairs, and Ms. Dunya Maumoon, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Maldives, held bilateral discussions at the Ministry of  External Affairs on Tuesday.

These discussions reflected the special and warm relationship between the two countries.

Prof. Peiris, welcoming Ms. Maumoon on her first official visit to Sri Lanka as Foreign Minister, said that the recent political transition which took place in the Maldives, indicated the maturity and foresight of all parties concerned.

Minister Rishad Bathiudeen attends the 5th SAARC Business Conclave in New Delhi

Minister of Industry and Commerce Rishad Bathiudeen led Sri Lanka’s delegation to the 5th SAARC Business Leaders Conclave in New Delhi on 16 January 2014. The Conclave, held under the theme “The south Asian Century-Progressing Towards regional Integration”, was organized by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry of India, the SAARC Chamber of Commerce & industries and the Federation of Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industries (FICCI). Speaking at the inaugural panel discussion of the Business Conclave, Minister Bathiudeen highlighted the outstanding trade statistics that Sri Lanka has shown for the past few years as an example of sound economic policies that has brought successful investments to the country.

Fisheries and Aquatic Resource Development Minister Rajitha Senaratne visits New Delhi

Fisheries and Aquatic Resource Development Minister Rajitha Senaratne visited New Delhi on 15-16 January, at the invitation of his counterpart, the Minister of Agriculture and Food Processing Industries of India, Sharad Pawar.

On the eve of the visit, the two Governments, following discussions between the External Affairs Ministers of India and Sri Lanka, decided to release the substantial number of fishermen who are presently in custody in India and in Sri Lanka as expeditiously as possible, commencing from 13 January, as a measure of reciprocal goodwill. Accordingly, Sri Lanka and India released 52 fishermen from each side on 13 January.

 “Lanka Impression”, a photography exhibition takes place at Redtory, the premier art space in Guangzhou, China, from December 20, 2013 to February 23, 2014, organized by the Consulate General of Sri Lanka in Guangzhou.

The Exhibition is a pictorial depiction of Sri Lanka’s eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites, giving visitors a chance to explore Sri Lanka’s historical and cultural heritage as well as the country’s unique biodiversity.
