“Ambassador’s Cup”Tournament promotes Cricket in Cuba

A six a side cricket tournament for the “Ambassador’s Cup “ organized by the Sri Lankan Embassy was held recently in Havana, with the participation of 6 teams, comprising Sri Lankan and Cuban students, as well as well-wishers who played in the matches with great enthusiasm and sportsmanship. The tournament was organized with the aim of promoting the game of cricket among Cubans.

The six teams that competed in the tournament included an Embassy team represented by staff and families. The day long tournament came to a close with the final match, being won by the team from University of ELAM beating the Sports School team.

Some Sri Lankan students who took part in the tournament travelled from provinces as far as 800 km from Havana, in a show of solidarity with their fellow students.

The trophies for the winning teams, best bowler, best batsman, best all-rounder and for the best woman bowler and best batswoman were given away by the Ambassadors of South Africa and Guyana in Cuba who graced the event as special guests.

The tournament which was organized for the first time in Cuba drew a large gathering of cricket fans who enjoyed the day with some outstanding performances in batting, bowling and fielding by all teams. The second edition of the “Ambassador’s Cup” is being scheduled for the latter part of 2014.
