Ambassador Sugeeshwara Gunaratna paid a courtesy call on the newly appointed Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Redwan Hussien, on 12 February at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ethiopia.
Congratulating the State Minister on his appointment, Ambassador Sugeeshwara Gunaratna provided an overview of the current status of bilateral relations and the upward trajectory in, especially, the trade and economic relationship.
The State Minister welcomed the Ambassador on his recent appointment and noted that Sri Lankan investments in the garment industry in Ethiopia were significant and were making a considerable contribution to Ethiopian society. The State Minister welcomed further Sri Lankan investments in Ethiopia.
The Ambassador stated that there was significant interest among the Sri Lankan business sector in Ethiopia and the African region and outlined sectors such as IT, agribusiness, construction and others in which Sri Lankan investments could play a role. Other areas in which the bilateral relationship could be expanded in the future was also discussed.
Both sides agreed that the proposed codeshare agreement between Sri Lankan Airlines and Ethiopian Airlines, along with a possible direct flight in the near future, could go a long way in promoting people to people contacts.
The State Minister was accompanied by Director General Asia and Pacific Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Dawit Yirga and other officials while Ambassador Sugeeshwara Gunaratna was accompanied by Attaché of the Embassy R. Ratheesparan.
