 Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Oman Ameer Ajwad presented Letter of Credence as the Non-resident Ambassador to the Republic of Yemen

Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Oman Omar Lebbe Ameer Ajwad presented his Letters of Credence to the President of the Republic of Yemen Abd Rabbuh Mansour Al Hadi at the Presidential Palace in Riyadh, the temporary residence of the President, on 16 August 2021, accrediting as the Non-resident Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Sri Lanka to the Republic of Yemen.

The Credential ceremony was held at the Presidential Palace in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia with the presence of Foreign Minister of the Republic of Yemen Ahmad Awad bin Mubarak and Chief of the Presidential Protocol Mohammed Haj Mahfoudh as well as other senior officials of the Government of the Republic of Yemen.

Ambassadors of Australia, New Zealand, Indonesia, Turkey and Mauritania also presented their Letters of Credence to the President of the Republic of Yemen on the same day.

During the audience with President Hadi, Ambassador Ameer Ajwad conveyed warm greetings and best wishes from President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa and the People of Sri Lanka to President Hadi and the friendly People of Yemen. Recalling the long standing historical relations between Sri Lanka and Yemen, Ambassador Ameer Ajwad extended his best wishes for the peace and prosperity of the People of Yemen. He also re-affirmed Sri Lanka’s commitment to further elevate cordial relations that happily exist between the two countries.

President Hadi welcomed Ambassador Ameer Ajwad and wished him every success in his new assignment as the Non-resident Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Sri Lanka to the Republic of Yemen. He also reciprocated his warm greetings and best wishes to the President, Prime Minister and the People of Sri Lanka. President Hadi expressed appreciation for Sri Lanka’s solidarity with the Government and the People of Yemen and reassured continued cooperation in the areas of mutual interest.

The Credential ceremony preceded with the presentation of open copies of Letters of Credence by Ambassador Ameer Ajwad to Foreign Minister of Yemen Ahmed Awad bin Mubarak, at the Embassy of Yemen in Riyadh. During the meeting, they explored ways and means to further promote closer ties between the two countries. Director of Foreign Minister’s office Ambassador Abdelkader Mohamed Hadi and Officer in charge of Asian Affairs at the Foreign Minister’s Office Dr. Ali Ahmed Shaglah also associated during the meeting.

On the sideline of the presentation of Credentials, Ambassador Ameer Ajwad also met the President of Consultative Council (Majid Al Sura) of Yemen Dr. Ahmad Ubaid bin Dagr who briefed the Ambassador Ameer Ajwad on the ongoing peace initiatives in Yemen. They also discussed enhancing mutual cooperation at bilateral as well as multilateral arena.

Ambassador Ameer Ajwad, who is the current Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Sri Lanka to the Sultanate of Oman, is a career diplomat with 23 years of both bilateral and multilateral diplomatic service. Prior to the current assignment, he served as the High Commissioner of Sri Lanka (Actg.) to Singapore and Brunei Darussalam. He also served as the Director General for the East Asia and Pacific Affairs at the Sri Lanka Foreign Ministry from 2015 to 2017. His diplomatic career entailed serving as the Counsellor (Human Rights) at the Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka to the United Nations in Geneva, Minister (Political) at the Sri Lanka Deputy High Commission in Chennai, India, and the Second Secretary/Head of Chancery in the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Ambassador Ameer Ajwad holds a Master’s Degree in Laws (LL.M) from the University of Colombo and a Bachelor’s Degree (BA) in Arts from the University of Peradeniya. He was admitted to the Bar as an Attorney-at-Law of the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka in 1997.

After the conclusion of the credential ceremony, the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Riyadh held a reception in honour of Ambassador Ameer Ajwad and his spouse Asmiya Ameer Ajwad.
