Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Thailand and Permanent Representative to UNESCAP Wijayanthi Edirisinghe met with the Sri Lankan community in Thailand for the first time, following the presentation of credentials to the King of Thailand. The reception, organized by the Embassy and Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka in Bangkok was held at the Embassy on 21 October 2024.
The event commenced with the blessings of Buddhist, Hindu, Muslim and Christian clergy, symbolizing unity and harmony among different communities. The gathering was attended by members of the Sri Lanka Association of Thailand, the Thai Sri Lanka Chamber of Commerce, and senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand.
Addressing the attendees, Ambassador Wijayanthi Edirisinghe emphasized the significance of fostering connections between the Sri Lankan community in Thailand and the Embassy. She highlighted the potential for collaboration in various sectors, including trade, culture and education. Moreover, the Ambassador expressed gratitude for the warmth that the Sri Lankan community in Thailand share and the vibrant spirit they demonstrate.
Ambassador Edirisinghe also emphasized the range of initiatives undertaken by the Embassy since her arrival to Thailand, including efforts to promote trade and investment, cultural exchange and to bolster bilateral relations. Further, she outlined the future plans and promotional activities scheduled to celebrate the upcoming 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Sri Lanka and Thailand, and emphasized the significance of collaboration in trade, tourism, and cultural heritage.
The Ambassador encouraged the diaspora to participate in the upcoming events, which will showcase the rich traditions of Sri Lanka and further enhance ties with Thailand.
Following the remarks of the Ambassador, guests were treated to a variety of traditional Sri Lankan dishes and the renowned Ceylon tea, allowing them to savor the rich culinary heritage of Sri Lanka while networking with each another.
The event marked a significant step in sustaining ties between the Sri Lankan community and the Embassy, setting a positive tone for prospective engagements.
