Ambassador Damayanthie Rajapakse presents Credentials to Latvian President Raimonds Vējonis

Ambassador Mrs. Damayanthie Rajapakse, concurrently accredited as the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka to the Republic of Latvia with residence in Stockholm presented Letters of Credence to His Excellency Raimonds Vējonis, President of the Republic of Latvia at Blackheads House, Residence of the President of the Republic of Latvia on 7th November, 2016.

At the outset, Ambassador extended the greetings of the President and the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka to His Excellency Raimonds Vējonis, the President of Latvia.

Ambassador discussed with the President of the Republic of Latvia the progress achieved by the National Unity Government of Sri Lanka in prioritising matters related to reconciliation, strengthening democracy, good governance and equitable and sustainable development.

The President of the Republic of Latvia whilst expressing interest on the development taking shape in Sri Lanka mentioned the need to forge closer ties between the two Governments.  To this end, His Excellency the President of the Republic of Latvia appreciated the efforts made by both countries to enter into bilateral Agreements encapsulating the areas of cooperation on Education and Science, Trade and Investment, Air connectivity and Tourism.

Meetings with the State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Latvia, Deputy Speaker of the Parliament of the Republic of Latvia and a visit to the Occupation Museum of Latvia were arranged for the Ambassador as an integral part of the programme following the Credentials ceremony held in Latvia.

Strengthening bonds between the two countries become ever so important, as the year 2016 marks the 20th Anniversary of Diplomatic relations between Sri Lanka and the Republic of Latvia.
