Ambassador Grace Asirwatham met with the President (Chief Justice) of the European Court of Justice (ECJ) Koen Lenaerts, KC, at the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg. The ECJ is the highest European Court. The European Courts of Justice are all based in Luxembourg.
During the meeting, the President of the Court stated that European law has developed vastly over the last 30 years and that it today applies not only to the EU Member States but also in relation to non EU citizens like asylum seekers and those involved in criminal activities, who reside, enter or leave EU territory. The President of the Court indicated that there were opportunities for Sri Lanka to learn about European law particularly in new areas, where legislation has been enacted to deal with new challenges and the possibilities for closer cooperation were discussed.
