The Embassy and Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka in Bangkok celebrated the Deepavali festival on 02 November 2024. This colorful event brought together the Sri Lankan community residing in Thailand, representatives from the Tamil Federation, and members of the Sri Lanka Thai Chamber of Commerce in Thailand. The event aimed at promoting ethnic harmony while implementing cultural diplomacy.
The ceremony commenced with a traditional Deepavali pooja, conducted by the Head Priest and two other priests from the Sri Maha Mari Amman Hindu Temple. Blessings were bestowed upon the Governments and the peoples of Sri Lanka and Thailand, and on the gathered community, fostering a spirit of unity and goodwill.
During the event, Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to Thailand, Wijayanthi Edirisinghe emphasized the role of such celebrations in reinforcing bonds among various ethnic groups. “Deepavali is not just a festival of lights; it symbolizes the triumph of good over evil and the importance of harmony among all communities”, she stated.
Further, the Ambassador quoted the Deepavali message by the President of Sri Lanka who invited people to join to create a new cultural existence that embodies compassion and critical thought, while emphasizing the importance of a cultural, political, and attitudinal transformation if Sri Lanka is to realize the hope for a prosperous country and a fulfilling life for all.
The staff of the Embassy of Sri Lanka had also organized a delightful cultural performance, which enhanced the festive atmosphere. The event was marked by vibrant rangoli decorations, traditional cuisine, and the joyful participation of attendees.
The Embassy and Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka in Bangkok remains committed to promoting cultural exchange as well as cooperation among different communities across Thailand.
