The Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Myanmar meets with the Union Ministers for Foreign Affairs and Home Affairs of Myanmar

The Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Myanmar Prabashini Ponnamperuma attended two separate meetings with Deputy Prime Minister and the Union Minister for Foreign Affairs of Myanmar U Than Swe, and Union Minister of Home Affairs of Myanmar Lt. Gen. Yar Pyae. During the meeting, rescuing the remaining Sri Lankans in the illegal scam centers in Myawaddy was discussed comprehensively, along with several other bilaterally important matters.

The Ambassador also made the two meetings an opportunity to express the gratitude and appreciation to the Government of Myanmar, for the assistance given in the rescue and repatriation of the 20 Sri Lankans detained in the illegal scam centers in Myawaddy, Myanmar in August 2024.

During the meeting held on 26 September 2024 with the Union Minister for Home Affairs of Myanmar, the continuous assistance for the rescue and repatriation of the remaining Sri Lankans was requested. The Minister re-confirmed Myanmar’s support, owing to the long standing, close and friendly relations between the two countries.

At the meeting with Deputy Prime Minister and the Union Minister for Foreign Affairs of Myanmar held on 27 September 2024, bilateral matters relevant to Sri Lanka and Myanmar including furthering of relations in the fields of economy, trade, and agriculture were discussed. In addition, religious and cultural cooperation was also taken up.
