Embassy of Sri Lanka in Jordan organizes a successful outreach program at M/S GIA Apparel in Aqaba

The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Jordan successfully concluded an outreach program on 08 June 2024 at the GIA Apparel factory in Aqaba, where more than 1100 Sri Lankans are employed, with a view to easing difficulties and inconveniences faced by the Sri Lankan workers. The factory is located 325 kilometers away from the Embassy.

While welcoming Ambassador J.A.D.S. Priyangika Wijegunasekara, the Group Operation Manager of the factory, Saman N. Disanayakage, offered 500 new employment opportunities for Sri Lankans in the upcoming factory projects.

Addressing the gathering, Ambassador Priyangika Wijegunasekara appreciated the importance of the role of the Sri Lankan workforce in the factory, not only in increasing Jordan’s exports but also in transferring knowledge and expertise to the Jordanian labour market. She also stressed the significant contribution made by them towards the Sri Lankan economy by transmitting foreign worker remittances to Sri Lanka. The Ambassador emphasized the Embassy’s commitment to ensuring the welfare, safety, and security of Sri Lankans by providing necessary consular and other assistance. She also thanked the Group Operation Manager of the factory for offering new employment opportunities to Sri Lankans and facilitating the factory visit.

During the interactive session with Sri Lankan employees, Third Secretary (Employment & Welfare,) P.A. Rupasingha, delivered a comprehensive presentation on Human Smuggling and Trafficking, and Consular Officer H.P. Liyanage made a presentation on the Consular Functions of the Mission. Bank of Ceylon Representative in Jordan Idunil Wickramasinghe, engaged with the Sri Lankan workers and educated them on effective ways of sending remittances, opening new accounts, etc.

In addition, consular assistance was extended to the Sri Lankan migrant workers and inquiries were made on their, and the welfare and safety.

The visit saw a positive exchange of ideas and the Embassy reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining close coordination with the factory’s senior management and the Sri Lankan employees.
