The Consulate General of Sri Lanka in Milan celebrated Deepavali which is also known as the festival of lights symbolizing the victory of good over evil, with the participation of members of the multi-ethnic and multi-faith Sri Lankan community in Milan on 18 November 2023.
At the outset of the programme, Rev Somasundaram Baskaran Kurukkal performed Ganapathi Pooja invoking blessings on the Sri Lankan community.
Addressing the gathering Consul General Dilani Weerakoon remarked that in Sri Lanka, Deepavali is a joyous festival depicting the rich cultural heritage that brings together people from different communities and backgrounds.
The Celebrations included welcoming guests with applying kumkum on their foreheads and serving pongal followed by Hindu traditional dances performed by Dharmakeerthi Sudharshana of Sudharshana Sri Rangayathanaya, student of the Chathurya Rangayathanaya choreographed by Chathuri Ranawaka, and a contemporary dance performance by the members of the staff of the Consulate General.
The premises of the Consulate General was decorated with traditional decorations including a Kolam.
At the end of the programme guests were invited to a reception of traditional Hindu cuisine.
