On 29 August 2023, the Consulate General of Sri Lanka in Mumbai celebrated the Onam Festival. Onam has a great religious significance in India, celebrated mostly by people of Kerala, who show their gratitude towards the land for a bountiful harvest through this annual festivity.
The Consulate was decorated with flowers and the traditional Onam Pookalam (floral rangoli). The customary Onam Sadhya (Lunch) was served on banana leaves with 31 varieties of dishes for around 50 guests.
On the invitation of Consul General Vethody, the Consul Generals of Mauritius and Bangladesh, the Head of Branch Secretariat of Ministry of External Affairs, Mumbai and the Under Secretary of Protocol, Government of Maharashtra attended the event.
The guests expressed their gratitude to the Mission for giving recognition to this Indian festival which is also celebrated in Sri Lanka by the Sri Lankans of Kerala origin.
