In collaboration with the Sri Lankan community in Lebanon, the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Beirut celebrated Thai Pongal on 20 January 2019 at the Embassy premises. Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Lebanon Mrs. H.M.G.R.R.K. Wijerathne Mendis inaugurated the celebration amidst a large gathering of Sri Lankan Hindu devotees.
On behalf of the Ambassador the Head of Chancery read out the Thai Pongal message of President Maithripala Sirisena to the gathering. Pongal milkrice prepared by devotees was offered to Lord Ganesh with religious rituals, blessing the participants.
Sri Lankan Tamil expatriates entertained the gathering with dances and songs. In concluding the event, participants were served traditional Tamil food and delicacies.
