Sri Lanka High Commission in Nigeria celebrates the 66th Anniversary of the National Day.

Sri Lanka’s 66th Independence Day celebrations were held, for the first time in Nigeria, at the Chancery premises, with the participation of the High Commissioner and the home-based staff and the local staff attached to the Mission. The National Flag was hoisted by H.E. P.D.P.S.A. Liyanage, High Commissioner, while playing Magula Bera in the background, followed by the National Anthem.

After the messages of His Excellency the President, the Hon. Prime Minister and the Hon. Minister of External Affairs were read by H.E. the High Commissioner and members of the Staff, the High Commissioner addressed the gathering. He specifically emphasized the great victory gained by H.E. Mahinda Rajapaksa, the President of Sri Lanka against the terrorist threat and thanked the leadership of the President.

A special dinner reception was organized in the evening by the High Commission at the “Serendib” Restaurant for the Sri Lankan expatriate community, well wishers and the friends of Nigeria.

Addressing the gathering, H. E. the High Commissioner stated that though Sri Lanka has successfully defeated terrorism, some foreign countries attempt to level charges of war crimes and other offences against Sri Lanka. Further, he emphasized that H.E. the President would never degrade the country and its people and the freedom the country has won.

At the conclusion of the official segment of the event, guests were provided to enjoy a variety of Sri Lankan food.
