CONSULATE GENERAL OF SRI LANKA IN LOS ANGELES PROMOTES SRI LANKAN EXPORT ITEMS, INVESTMENT AND TOURISM AT WORLD TRADE WEEK

The Consulate General of Sri Lanka in Los Angeles participated at the 87th Annual World Trade Week, organized by the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce at the JW Marriott Los Angeles on 2nd May, 2013.

The objective of the World Trade Week was to educate the public on positive aspects on international trade on the local and national economy through trade, investment, tourism and educational programs and events.

Dr. Hector Weerasinghe, Consul General, Mr. Sidath Kumar, Consul/Minister (Commercial) and other staff of the Consulate General took an initiative to promote Sri Lanka’s export products, investment and tourism at this event. Copies of DVDs on Sri Lanka trade directory, doing business in Sri Lanka, investment opportunities and Sri Lanka tourism and promotional brochures on Sri Lanka’s export items, investment and tourism were displayed and distributed among the prospective businessmen/investors. Samples of Pure Ceylon tea and cinnamon were also distributed. More importantly, the interested parties were briefed on business, investment and joint venture opportunities in Sri Lanka and projected Sri Lanka as an attractive tourist destination in the world.

M/s. Suriya LLC, a Sri Lankan company based in Los Angeles gifted a Buddha Statue “Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva” to the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce for silent auction at the World Trade Week event. This statue was well received by the participants and offered for the highest bid.

Some other Consulates and Trade Promotional Organizations in Los Angeles also promoted their products and services during this event.

More than 500 business executives, US Government and civic leaders and members of the diplomatic corps participated at this significant event, which received extensive media coverage. This event prominently featured in electronic promotions to a network of more than 5,000 local and international trade related businesses and also to the LA Chamber membership of 1,600 companies and 8,000 business contacts in the Los Angeles area.

During the World Trade Week program, the keynote speaker, General Manager of Microsoft Corporation, Mr. Tylor Bryson, in his address mentioned about how new technology can help small to mid-sized businesses become more competitive in the global market. The program also included an award ceremony honoring individuals and companies that have had a major impact on the international trade community.
