Shanghai awakes to the rhythm of Sri Lankan traditional performances

Four days of Sri Lankan traditional dancing, music and singing in different venues with presentations on introduction to Sri Lanka, Sri Lanka tourism promotion videos and a gem show, are among the latest promotional activities organized by the Sri Lanka Consulate General in Shanghai.

The main event was held at a 300-seat theatre of the Cultural Center of Xujiahui Community which was full with affluent Chinese from the Xuhui District and the special invitees, included Ms. Jiao Yang, President, Shanghai Women’s Federation while Mr. Wang Qicai, Deputy Director General, Standing Committee of the Xuhui District People’s Congress was the Chief guest.  Senior officials of Xuhui Cultural Affairs Bureau, Xuhui Foreign Affairs Office, Shanghai Institutes for International Studies, Shanghai Gem and Jade Trade Association, General Shanghai Tea Trade Association & SriLankan Airlines too were present.

The 22 performers are from the Ranaranga Dance Academy in Sri Lanka. Local hospitality is provided by the organizers of the 14th China Shanghai International Arts Festival.

This is the first time that a Sri Lankan performance was  organized in collaboration with the China Shanghai International Arts Festival in Shanghai.

In addition to the performances, Consul General made a presentation to introduce Sri Lanka and screened a DVD on tourism promotion. There was also a gem exhibition and the theatre and its environs were adorned with Sri Lankan style décor. Guests were given a package including tourism brochures & Ceylon Tea provided by two Sri Lankans who import the same to China.

Five other performances are to be held at different parts of Shanghai targeting the residents of those areas.
