63rd Independence Day Celebration in Palestine

Sri Lanka Representative Office in Palestine held a grand reception in Ramallah to mark the 63rd Independence Day of Sri Lanka.

Crowded reception hall saw a large number of diplomats, officials, businessmen, travel agents and distinguish personalities. The reception commenced with the lighting of the traditional oil lamp and sermons by Islamic and Christian clergymen blessing Sri Lanka and President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Representative of Sri Lanka in Palestine, Dr. T. Jayasinghe in his address stated that this year Sri Lanka is celebrating the 63rd Independence Day with assured and confident expectations for a bright future. World Bank leaders and many experts predict that Sri Lanka will emerge as the miracle of South Asia.

He also stated that Sri Lanka apart from defeating armed terrorism also defeated the foreign sponsored media terrorism.

Dr. Jayasinghe thanked the Palestinians for visiting Sri Lanka in large numbers and importing large quantities of tea.

Coming to the Palestinian scene, Dr. Jayasinghe stated that Sri Lanka recognized Palestine state as back as 1988 and it was only last month that it decided to upgrade the Representative Office in Palestine to the level of an Embassy.

Dr. Jayasinghe also stated that H. E. Mahinda Rajapaksa is a consistent supporter of the Palestinian cause from 1970. He was also the Head of the Sri Lanka Committee for Solidarity with Palestine from 1975 and he will continue to be with the struggles of the Palestinian people in their search for independence.

Speaking on behalf of the Palestinian National Authority, Dr. Mohammed Shtayyeh, Advisor to H. E. President Mahmoud Abbas, stated that Palestine value the friendship and solidarity extended by H. E. Mahinda Rajabaksa more than anything else. He is a unique Head of Sri Lanka that is fighting for the independence of Palestine and as such Palestinians are ever grateful to him.
