The High Commission of Sri Lanka in Islamabad celebrated Sri Lanka’s 67th Anniversary of Independence on 4th February 2015, at the High Commission premises with the hoisting of the national flag by High Commissioner Air Chief Marshal (R) Jayalath Weerakkody and singing the national anthem followed by the lighting of traditional oil lamp.
Multi-religious observances were conducted with the participations of the Sri Lankan community in Pakistan. Addressing the gathering, High Commissioner emphasized the important role of Sri Lankan expatriates towards their Motherland and explained the new Government’s policy on developments as well as bilateral relations between Sri Lanka and Pakistan.
National Day messages of His Excellency, Maithripala Sirisena, the President, Hon. Ranil Wickremesinghe, the Prime Minister and Hon. Mangala Samaraweera, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Sri Lanka were also read. At the end of the event, traditional refreshments were served to the gathering.
A reception was organized to commemorate the 67th National Day of Sri Lanka at Serena Hotel, Islamabad in the same day evening. Federal Minister of Defence Production Hon. Rana Tanveer Hussain and Federal Minister for Port and Shipping Hon. Kamran Michael were graced the occasion. Parliamentarians, Ambassadors and Members of the Diplomatic corps, representation from international organizations, Members of the business community, academia, and members of civil society, Media personnel and the Sri Lankan community in Pakistan were present of the occasion. About 350 invitees participated at this function.
