Repatriation of Human remains
Eligibility: Sri Lankan Nationals, Native Sri Lankans who are holding Foreign Passports
Method of submitting an application: Directly at the Consular Affairs Division
Through all the D/S and AGA office
as per Administrative Circular 04/2017

Payment for application: None
Time to submit application: 0830 Hrs – 1600 Hrs on working days (During holidays and weekends, documents could handover to the duty officer of the Ministry.
Fees paying to obtain this service: Documentation free of charge
Period taken to provide the Service (Ordinary Service and Priority Service):
- No sooner the foreign employer or the sponsor completes documentation work
- Within 3 to 15 days (Cases reported from Saudi Arabia would take 2 – 3 weeks due to the long procedures for repatriation of human remains)
Necessary Supporting documents:
- Details of the deceased (Passport copy, National Identity card and Birth certificate)
- Affidavit by the legal heir consenting repatriation/ burial/ cremation of human remains
- Marriage certificate, Birth certificate of the applicant/ complaint to establish relationship if deceased was married. If not, parents of the deceased should submit documents
- Contact details and name of the foreign employer/ agent
- Details of the Consignee who is receiving human remains in Sri Lanka
- Additional documents will be required for any name difference
Registration of Deaths Abroad
Next of Kin (NOK) should apply the death certificate through the Consular Division.
The following requests should be produced:
- A sum of Rs. 2170/- should be paid as processing fee and a payment receipt should be produced.
- Local death certificate issued by the respective foreign country, cancelled passport, burial or repatriation documents of the deceased should be produced.
- If NoK is not the applicant, consent the NoK.
- You may visit the central record room of the Registrar General Department with payment receipt and other supportive documents.
- Relevant documents for death registration are forwarded to the respective Sri Lanka Mission Abroad.
- Original copy of the death certificate can be collected from the Consular Division.
- Additional Copies of the death certificate can be obtained from the Registrar General’s Department.
