Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the Kingdom of Thailand Wijayanthi Edirisinghe, met with the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence of Thailand Phumtham Wechayachai, on 7 May 2025, to discuss and further enhance defence cooperation between the two countries at the Ministry of Defence.
During the meeting, Ambassador Edirisinghe expressed gratitude to the Royal Thai Government on behalf of the Government of Sri Lanka for its continued support, particularly in the successful rescue and repatriation of Sri Lankan nationals who had been victims of human trafficking and cybercrime operations in Myanmar.
The Ambassador further underscored the importance of the early finalization of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Defence Cooperation between Sri Lanka and Thailand and highlighted the need to review the existing MoU between the Royal Thai Armed Forces and Sri Lankan counterparts on Intelligence Exchange Cooperation. The Defence Minister assured his full support for the upcoming study tour of the Sri Lankan Defence Staff College delegation, scheduled to take place in July 2025.
Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to deepening bilateral defence relations through experience-sharing, joint capacity development programmes, and sustained cooperation in addressing regional and global security challenges. The Head of Chancery A W S Samanmali and Minister Counsellor (Commercial) Vireshika Bandra also joined the meeting at the Defence Ministry.
