Latin America and the Caribbean Division
Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) comprises 33 countries and three principal sub-regions: South America, Central America and the Caribbean and Mexico.
Brazil, Cuba, Antigua and Barbuda, Argentina, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Commonwealth of Dominica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Grenada, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Vincent and Grenadines, Saint Lucia, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Uruguay, Venezuela are those 33 countries.
Sri Lanka maintains two resident Missions in the region, namely Brazil with concurrent accreditation to nine (09) Latin American countries Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname and Uruguay, and Cuba with concurrent accreditation to nine (09) Caribbean countries, Commonwealth of Dominica, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Ecuador, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Panama, Venezuela. Washington D.C. is concurrently accredited to Mexico and Trinidad and Tobago and the Permanent Representative to the United Nations (PRUN) in New York is accredited to the Bahamas. Furthermore, Sri Lanka also engages its outreach with countries in the LAC Region through PRUN in New York and the High Commission of Sri Lanka in New Delhi.
Brazil and Cuba have established Embassies in Colombo to manage their interests in Sri Lanka. Many other LAC countries look after their interests in Sri Lanka through Missions based in New Delhi. The Panama Embassy in Vietnam is concurrently accredited for Sri Lanka.
Diplomatic Relations: The Region is significant for Sri Lanka’s political and economic relations. Sri Lanka maintains cordial relations with all the countries in the LAC. Sri Lanka has established Diplomatic Relations with 31 countries and expects to establish Diplomatic relations with Antigua & Barbuda and Belize shortly.
Honorary Consuls: Sri Lanka has appointed Honorary Consuls in Bahamas, Chile, Brazil (Sao Paulo), Colombia, Dominican Republic, Panama and Suriname.
Organization of American States (OAS): As the principal multilateral forum for the Latin American and Caribbean region, the Organization of American States (OAS) offers a unique platform for Sri Lanka as a Permanent Observer to engage constructively with the countries of the Latin America and the Caribbean region or the Western hemisphere, strengthen interregional dialogue, and foster mutual understanding and cooperation. Further, the OAS presence with national offices in the entire Hemisphere allows Permanent Observers to interact at the local level through their Embassies. Currently, 34 independent states of the Americas are members of the OAS and it has 75 Permanent Observers.
