The Embassy of Sri Lanka welcomed American visitors as part of Passport DC’s prestigious ‘Around the World Embassy Tour’ on Saturday, 03 May 2025, from 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Under the guidance of Ambassador Mahinda Samarasinghe, the Embassy curated a vibrant showcase to promote Sri Lanka as an exceptional tourist destination. The event saw an official turnout of over 4,200 U.S. nationals, as verified by Passport DC organizers.
A highlight of the open house was the “Beauty of Sri Lanka” photographic exhibition, featuring over 80 striking images of the nation’s ancient heritage, breathtaking landscapes, wildlife, and people. Organized by the America - Sri Lanka Photographic Art Society Los Angeles, and led by Suriya Perera, Andy Samarasena, Lakshitha Karunarathna, Sameera Kotelawala, and Riznad Hussain, the exhibition captivated attendees.
Visitors experienced authentic Sri Lankan hospitality, indulging in traditional cuisine with live cooking demonstrations of Kottu Roti, Hoppers, and Rice & Curry. Complementing the culinary experience, freshly brewed hot and iced Ceylon tea—sponsored by Basilur (Sri Lanka) and QTrade Teas & Herbs (California, USA)—was served to all guests. Organizational funding support was provided by the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau.
Adding to the cultural immersion, traditional Sri Lankan dance performances—featuring up-country, down-country, and northern styles with drums—were presented at intervals by students from four local academies led by Chathuri Wickramarachchi, Lanka Mudannayake, Indika Attanayake, and Achila Perera. Live musical entertainment by the “Serendib” band, led by Kutila Dias alongside local Sri Lankan singers, further enriched the ambiance.
Guests also had the unique opportunity to dress in traditional Sri Lankan attire, while three stalls in the Embassy garden showcased traditional handicrafts, sponsored by Sri Lankan-American vendors. Complimentary packs of Ceylon tea, sponsored by Basilur Tea (Sri Lanka), were gifted to visitors.
“Passport DC”, organized by Events DC, brings together over 60 foreign missions, including the Embassy of Sri Lanka, in a citywide celebration of Washington D.C.'s diplomatic diversity. The festival, held throughout May, honors international culture, with the first Saturday designated as ‘International Cultural Awareness Month’, featuring embassy open houses.
A signature annual event, Passport DC offers Washington D.C. residents the rare chance to explore global traditions, performances, and exhibitions—all within a single day.
