The Ambassador of Sri Lanka in the Philippines Chanaka Talpahewa, had discussions with Princess Ashi Kesang Choden Wangchuck of Bhutan on 02 May 2025 during her three-day visit to the Philippines. She is a member of the Bhutanese Royal Family, daughter of the fourth King of Bhutan Jigme Singye Wangchuck and Queen Mother Ashi Tshering Pem Wangchuck and half-sister of the current King Druk Gyalpo (Dragon King) Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck. Princess Ashi Kesang is the Executive Director of Bhutan’s Buddhist Art & Cultural Conservation Centre (BACCC) under the Central Monastic Body and is actively engaged in restoring thangkas and preserving Bhutan's artistic and cultural heritage.
The discussions included the shared Buddhist heritage of Sri Lanka and Bhutan and the importance of restoring and preserving ancient archeological sites and monuments. The Ambassador noted Sri Lanka’s longstanding tradition and expertise in archeological conservation, which could be shared if required. The potential for academic and research collaborations on common Buddhist heritage was also discussed.
The Princess expressed interest in visiting Sri Lanka, particularly to pay homage to the Sacred Tooth Relic and the sacred Bo-tree. The Ambassador welcomed the idea and assured full assistance in coordinating such a visit.
