
The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Cairo commemorated the 78th Anniversary of Sri Lanka’s Independence with a solemn Flag Hoisting Ceremony held on 4 February 2026 at the Embassy premises.
The National Flag was hoisted by the Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the Arab Republic of Egypt, followed by the singing of the National Anthem by Sri Lankan students in Cairo. Two minutes of silence were then observed in solemn remembrance of the patriots who made the supreme sacrifice in securing the nation’s freedom.
Multi-religious observances were conducted by clergies representing the Buddhist, Hindu, Islamic and Christian faiths, invoking blessings for peace, unity and prosperity for Sri Lanka and its people. Independence Day messages from H.E. the President, the Hon. Prime Minister, and the Hon. Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism were read at the ceremony
Addressing the gathering, Ambassador Sisira Senavirathne highlighted the importance of independence and sovereignty, emphasizing the need to further strengthen national unity and work collectively towards the sustainable development and prosperity of Sri Lanka. The Ambassador also expressed appreciation to the Sri Lankan expatriate community in Egypt for their support and contributions extended to the affected communities in Sri Lanka in the aftermath of the recent Ditwah cyclone.
The ceremony was attended by members of the Sri Lankan expatriate and business community’s resident in Egypt, and following the official proceedings, participants were invited to a special Sri Lankan breakfast featuring traditional Sri Lankan delicacies.
