
The Embassy of Sri Lanka in the Kingdom of Bahrain celebrated Thaipongal in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Club in Bahrain at the Embassy premises on 23 January 2026, bringing together members of the Sri Lankan community in a spirit of unity and cultural pride.
The event commenced with the traditional Pongal pooja, symbolising thanksgiving for the bountiful harvest.
Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the Kingdom of Bahrain, Shanika Dissanayake expressed her sincere appreciation to the Sri Lanka Club for joining hands with the Embassy to celebrate Thai Pongal with the community. She commended the teamwork and cooperation of the Sri Lankan community that contributed to the resounding success of the event. The Ambassador also sought the continued support of the Sri Lankan community in Bahrain for the recently launched Rebuilding Sri Lanka Initiative, aimed at supporting national development priorities in the aftermath of Cyclone Ditwah.
The event comprised vibrant traditional dance performances from the Children of the Sri Lankan community. The programme also featured an introduction to Pongal by Master Virat Shane from the Al Noor school and an informative introduction on the significance and traditions of Thaipongal by Mrs. Nisha Pratheepan.
Minister Madhuka Silva delivered a brief presentation on the newly launched official website of the Rebuilding Sri Lanka Initiative, outlining its objectives and ongoing projects, and highlighting opportunities for community engagement and contribution.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by President of the Sri Lanka Club in Bahrain Chithalka Ambrose,. Guests were served traditional festive delicacies, including Pongal rice.
