
The Embassy of Sri Lanka celebrated the 78th Anniversary of the Independence of Sri Lanka on 4 February 2026 at the Seoul Film Center, together with the Sri Lankan community in the Republic of Korea.
The event commenced with the hoisting of the National Flag by the Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the Republic of Korea, M. K. Pathmanaathan, followed by the singing of the National Anthem.
Multi-religious observances, including blessings upon Sri Lanka and the people, were conducted by the Venerable Maha Sangha and religious dignitaries representing the Hindu, Muslim, and Catholic faiths.
The National Independence Day messages of President Anura Kumara Disanayaka, Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment, and Tourism, Vijitha Herath, were read in Sinhala, Tamil, and English during the celebrations.
Addressing the gathering, Ambassador M. K. Pathmanaathan emphasized the importance of the collective contribution of all Sri Lankans, guided by their unwavering resolve and unity, in supporting the Government’s efforts to build a more advanced, resilient and dignified nation. The Ambassador also recalled the vital role played by Sri Lankans living abroad in the socio-economic development of the country and expressed sincere appreciation for the significant contributions made by the Sri Lankan community in the Republic of Korea through their hard-earned remittances in support of the national economy.
A short video on the “Rebuilding Sri Lanka” Programme was screened during the event. The Embassy expressed its sincere appreciation to all Sri Lankans in the Republic of Korea who generously contributed to the Rebuilding Sri Lanka Fund, supporting the Government’s efforts to assist communities affected by Cyclone Ditwah, restore essential services, rebuild vital infrastructure, and help affected families return to normalcy with hope and dignity.
The event was further enlivened by traditional cultural performances presented by the students of the Sunday Dhamma School of the Korea–Sri Lanka Mahavihara.
The event concluded with guests being invited to enjoy Sri Lankan cuisine.
