Sri Lanka Embassy in Jakarta celebrates the 78th Anniversary of Independence

The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Jakarta celebrated the 78th Anniversary of Independence at the Sri Lanka Residence on 4 February 2026, with the participation of the Sri Lankan community in Indonesia, Honorary Consuls of Sri Lanka in Indonesia, senior officials from the Indonesian Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Defence, Indonesian well-wishers, and members of the business community.

The event commenced with the hoisting of the National Flag of Sri Lanka by Ambassador-designate Sashikala Premawardhane, followed by the singing of the National Anthems of Sri Lanka and Indonesia. Religious observances were conducted by clergy representing Buddhism, Hinduism, Christianity, and Islam, invoking blessings upon the Government and the people of Sri Lanka.

During the ceremony, the National Day Messages issued by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism Vijitha Herath were read by the Embassy officials in Sinhala, Tamil, and English.

In her remarks, Ambassador-designate Premawardhane highlighted the key milestones and challenges of post-independence Sri Lanka through a visual presentation. She also expressed appreciation for the support extended by the Sri Lankan community in Indonesia and Indonesian well-wishers for their invaluable contributions towards the “Rebuilding Sri Lanka” initiative, and invited the gathering to further support the Fund.

The event was attended by over 170 guests and concluded with the serving of traditional Sri Lankan cuisine.
