At the 30th Session of the Conference of the States Parties (CSP) to the Chemical Weapons Convention that commenced today (24 November) in The Hague, Sri Lanka was elected by acclamation as a Vice-Chairperson of the Conference. Sri Lanka will hold this position for one year.
The Conference of the States Parties oversees the implementation of the Chemical Weapons Convention, promotes the Convention’s objectives, and reviews compliance with the Convention. It is composed of the 193 Member States of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) and meets annually for one week in The Hague. The OPCW is the implementing body for the Chemical Weapons Convention and was established when the Convention entered into force in April 1997. Sri Lanka ratified the Convention in 1994.
Sri Lanka had previously served as a Vice-Chairperson of the CSP in 2013. The 30th Session of the CSP is being held from 24–28 November 2025.
