Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka in Bangkok, Wijayanthi Edirisinghe met with the Chairperson of the House Committee on Legal Affairs, Justice, and Human Rights of the Parliament of Thailand, Kamonsk Leewamoh and Vice Chairperson, Kannavee Suebsang on 22 January 2025. The objective of the meeting was to strengthen bilateral cooperation in legal and human rights matters.
The engagement also provided an opportunity to exchange views on regional and global legal challenges and discuss the importance of mutual support in upholding justice and human rights.
The Chairperson appreciated the longstanding ties between Thailand and Sri Lanka and emphasized the importance of continued dialogue and collaboration in legal affairs. The Committee acknowledged Sri Lanka’s efforts in legal and judicial reforms and expressed interest in deepening inter-parliamentary relations.
The Ambassador highlighted the alarming rise in cases of Sri Lankan nationals falling victims to trafficking schemes related to cyber scams in Southeast Asia with a particular focus on operations along the Thai border. Over the past two years, many Sri Lankans alongside victims of other nationalities have been lured into exploitative situations.
Acknowledging the gravity of the situation, the Chairperson and the Vice Chairperson expressed their awareness and concern of human trafficking activities in the region and affirmed that the Royal Thai Government will continue to support to rescue Sri Lankan victims. The Vice Chairperson further reported that their office is in the process of identifying locations of the victims of human trafficking and assured the commitment of the Royal Thai Government.
The meeting concluded with a renewed pledge of cooperation between Sri Lanka and Thailand in addressing these critical issues and working towards protecting the rights of victims and detainees.
